Idea: wearable ceramics, pieces that could be physically worn on your body
Concept: this is a set dedicated to certain tropes and concepts imbedded in Catholicism and Christianity. And they’re worn in ways to honor and examine symbolic meanings of body parts across cultures.
The star ring is symbolic of the northern star, light, hope, and guidance. Worn on the middle finger which is representative of the head, neck and trunk. It is associated with the planet Saturn (our need for limitations and self control).
The “our mother Mary” ring is visual representation of a vulva designed from traditional paintings of a crying Mary. I made it to confront the Churches ideas of purity, sex, sin, and the control it places over peoples bodies and sexual freedoms. The tear is representative Mary’s tears, she cries not only over the sins of the world, but also over the pain she endured in her earthly life, referred to as “the seven sorrows of Mary”.
The chain necklace represents the physical and non-physical chains the church has directly indirectly put on the worlds peoples through its ties to colonialism and capitalism.
